about

(2008) Vento do Norte

Vento do Norte is a unique international saxophone ensemble of wilful young musicians. They come from Venezuela, Portugal and the Netherlands and they are all highly talented students of Henk van Twillert at the Escola Superior de Música e das Artes do Espectáculo in Porto, Portugal. In 2007, they were awarded first prize at the prestigious Concorso Internazionale di musica da camera ‘Città di Chieri’ in Italy.

Vento do Norte combines a modern vision of chamber music with compelling interpretations. They play unique adaptations of Bach, Beethoven and Mendelssohn, transform melancholic fado music, stir up rousing tangos by Piazzolla, and enrich the laden soul of James Brown. This is their first CD, which was recorded during the Yamaha Pro Custom Sax Tour Benelux in the spring of 2008.

The ensemble is rapidly conquering the world: from festivals and theatres in Southern Europe to stages in Caracas, Venezuela. Vento do Norte has worked with famous musicians, including Claude Delangle, Benjamin Herman, Mario Marzi, Rudy Haemers and François Glorieux. In early 2007, the group was invited to play a series of concerts in Brussels and Antwerp to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the European Union. In 2008 they toured through Belgium, Luxembourg and the Netherlands.

“I consider it a real joy and privilege to work with all my talented students. Not only are they very driven to work together on establishing our own style. They are also high spirited, do not fear a challenge and are willing to discover a new approach towards music”.
Henk van Twillert Amsterdam 2008

Vento do Norte is one of those cases in which the true learnship and fresh youth are coupled together in the construction of a fascinating sonic universe. We should be grateful to the maestro Henk van Twillert and his Vento do Norte by all that they are giving us as well as its poetic: liberty and rigor, tradition and innovation. And, essentially by the pleasure of playing with the joy of a permanent discover.
